Earth Day Poem

a body of water

Islands shaped by tide and wind,
Is where this little tale begins.
Where land is thin, yet life runs deep—
A coastal guard where secrets sleep.

First comes the marsh, all green and gold,
A nursery where young and old
Of fish and fowl find food and rest,
In grasses swaying, nature’s nest.

Beyond the marsh, a forest stands,
With gnarled trunks and drifting sands.
The maritime—resilient, rare,
With oaks and pines that scent the air.

Then to the beach, the final frame,
Where dunes and shells all praise Earth’s name.
Waves beat the shore and bring new things
Sand comes and goes and sometimes stings.

So raise your voice, and protect this home
For barrier islands, creatures roam.
A wild, essential, sacred place
Islands which we can’t replace.

This Earth Day, may we understand
there’s more to islands than just sand—
And let’s let nature be,
Where salt marsh, forest, & beach meet the sea.
