IOP Rec Department Speaker Series: Women’s Coastal Skills

Last weekend we participated in the IOP Rec Department’s speaker series! We did a miniature talk to promote our upcoming Women’s Coastal Skills Workshop. Shane introduced our crew, setting the tone for a fun, hands-on learning experience rooted in connection and curiosity. Courtney (with Golden Girls Outdoors) led us through the basics of boater safety before Nike introduced the saltmarsh—one of our most powerful coastal ecosystems. Next Shane gave an overview on shellfish, where we learned about clams, oysters, and mussels, where they’re found, how they’re harvested, and how South Carolina’s Department of Environmental Services manages shellfish area openings and closures to keep people and ecosystems safe. From there, the learning went fully interactive through rotating stations. Michelle broke down crabbing basics—from blue and stone crabs to gear, bait, mesh sizes, seasons, and regulations—while Shane covered fishing techniques, target species, and gear options for every level, including rods, reels, and essential knots. Morgan taught people cast netting basics and our participants asked great questions and brought great energy! A big shoutout to IOP Rec Department and Tammy Cox for hosting us! Thank you!
