SC7 Jocasse Gorges

Located in the northwestern corner of South Carolina, the Jocassee Gorges are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the eastern United States. This rugged landscape of mountains, waterfalls, deep gorges, and forested streams is home to thousands of species of plants and animals. The cool, moist climate creates a temperate rainforest-like habitat in some areas, allowing plants that are typically found much farther north in the Appalachian Mountains to thrive here. Keep an eye out for black bears, white-tailed deer, bobcats, peregrine falcons, and colorful eastern newts. The forests are filled with mountain laurel, rhododendron, eastern hemlock, and a variety of wildflowers that flourish in this unique environment.

Whether you’re looking for adventure or a peaceful escape, the Jocassee Gorges offer something for everyone. Visitors can hike scenic trails, paddle or boat on Lake Jocassee, fish for trout, swim beneath waterfalls, camp, birdwatch, and enjoy breathtaking mountain views.  Its incredible biodiversity, rare mountain habitats, and outdoor recreation make it an amazing area to explore!
