SEWE and ducks!

a flock of seagulls are swimming in a body of water

In the winter we see an influx of migrating ducks and other waterfowl that come spend time in the low country. During the winter there is less food for ducks available in areas that have harsher winters. Down in the low country we have several freshwater bodies of water AND salt water marshy habitats where migrating waterfowl can get freshwater AND feed!

One species of duck that frequently visit us in the winter is the Hooded Merganser! They are a type of diving duck which means exactly what it sounds like. They dive underwater for fish and rely on sight to find their prey. Their eyes are protected by nictitating membranes and according to Cornell Lab All About Birds, “they can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision”.  So imagine being able to adjust size or shape of your cornea or adjusting the way your eye could bend light. Super cool!

With that being said, a huge event is happening in Charleston this coming weekend. It is SEWE–aka the Southeastern Wildlife Expo!

“The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is a celebration of the great outdoors through fine art, live entertainment and special events. It’s where artists, craftsmen, collectors and sporting enthusiasts come together to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle and connect through a shared passion for wildlife.”

Another fantastic even that is happening on the 15th is a FREE OYSTER ROAST. You heard that right people! Island Cabana located downtown Charleston is hosting this event. 50 Immigration Street  from 2-5 pm!
