Sheepish Grin!

Sheepshead showing off its teefers!

Known for their wild human-like teeth (yes, really), sheepshead fish are coastal favorites commonly found around jetties, docks, and oyster reefs. Those chompers aren’t just for show—they use them to crunch through hard-shelled snacks like barnacles, crabs, and clams, oysters, and other crunchy things. Think of them as the shellfish connoisseurs of the sea.

Sheepshead have bold vertical stripes (earning them the nickname “convict fish”), and they can grow up to 30 inches long—though most are a foot or two. They are often found hanging around structures in saltwater that have oysters growing on them. These “artificial” oyster reefs can provide shelter and food for the sheepsheads!
