Join South Carolina Aquarium and Barrier Island EcoTours on a waterway cleanup between Isle of Palms and Capers Island.
The South Carolina Aquarium and Barrier Island Eco Tours are collaborating on another Capers Island Cleanup Adventure on February 21st from 2:30–6:30 p.m. This special event will conclude with an oyster roast, chili, and a beach fire on Capers Island.
The focus of this cleanup will be the backside, or marsh side, of Capers Island—an area with limited accessibility that doesn’t get cleaned as often. Marine debris is frequently pushed into these marshy areas during king tides.
Departing from the Isle of Palms Marina, we will cruise up the Intracoastal Waterway to Capers Island. Along the way, we will observe dolphins and other wildlife while a naturalist answers questions during the ride. Upon arrival, we will disembark at the dock on the backside of Capers, where we will walk along the edge of the forest and marsh, collecting debris along our path. If you and your crew are adventurous, don’t mind getting muddy or walking through tall grasses, and have a positive attitude, this is the cleanup for you! This is a “go-at-your-own-pace” adventure, and we will take our time. Easier walking route alternatives can be offered if needed.
After about an hour of hard work, we will load back onto the boat and head to Capers Island’s beach, where your efforts will be rewarded with grilled, steamed, fresh, local oysters. Homemade chili with all the fixin’s will also be provided, along with a water cooler to refill water bottles. On the return trip, your captain will make a pit stop at an oyster bed to shuck oysters right off the bank. Then, weather permitting, we’ll enjoy a gorgeous sunset on the ride back to the marina.
Feel free to bring a small personal cooler with anything you’d like to eat or drink. Please wear boots, long pants, and long sleeves, and bring your own gardening gloves or gloves you don’t mind getting dirty. Pro tip: Bring an extra pair of shoes so you can change out of muddy boots and rinse them with fresh water at the marina. We recommend dressing in layers, depending on the weather.
