Captivated by Capers
“After living in Charleston for 13 years it’s hard to believe that I’m still discovering this town. During my stay at Wild Dunes Resort a couple of weeks ago, I took one of their excursions – an eco-tour to Capers Island and I was blown away. The van ride from the resort to the Isle of Palms marina was a quick 5 minute ride and we hopped on a boat with Barrier Island Eco Tours.” … Continue Reading
Went on a school Ecotour of Caper Island yesterday. We all learned a lot and had fun. Bret was our well educated guide and made learning exciting. Every part of the tour ran smoothly from the boat ride, island walk about, grilled beach lunch and return to the marina. Hands on experience with local crabs and sea life washed up on the beach. Highly recommend for school groups or just an educational tour if you are in the area. Good job Bret! – Amber A., Google Reviews
Great company, great trip everything was perfect. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and down to earth. Me and my partner took the sunset Cruise and enjoyed every minute. We actually saw dolphins lots of them and got up close and personal with a few crabs and fish. The boat ride was smooth and the time spent on Capers was awesome. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! – LaCarla G., Google Reviews
We took my family of sixteen, ages 4 to 92, on this fantastic adventure. This is one of the best family activities we have ever done. Shane and Thomas were amazing with the kids. Watching all my grandchildren crabbing and getting SO excited when they netted a crab was the highlight of my trip. And then we went fishing – each one the the kids caught fish -Shane and Thomas baited their hooks. If you are looking for an amazing family activity – do not miss this EcoTour. We loved it. – Karen B., Google Reviews
My husband and I were celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary with a week long vacation. And I must say that the blue crabbing tour was the best part of the whole week. They were more then fantastic. They made sure the adults had just as much fun as the kids. Their knowledge, laid back attitudes and willingness to teach and answer any questions you may have was phenomenal. I will definitely take their tour again. Thank you Courtney, Jonah, and Captain Stingray. – Charyssa G., Google Reviews
A great way to experience South Carolina’s beautiful coastline and barrier islands. Sunset cruise leaves from Isle if Palms Marina for a gentle ride through marsh creeks, sighting dolphins, and pulling crab pots. Katherine was a fabulous hands on guide providing marine life information that was both interesting and entertaining. Captain Mike provided smooth sailing! Highly recommend this relaxing trip… and Capers Island never disappoints. – Lynne P., Google Reviews
Amazing field trip experience. Different than any other tour I have done In Charleston. Highly recommend. – Henry C., Facebook Reviews
Courtney, Brett, and Moses (the standard poodle) were PHENOMENAL. Very friendly. I cannot recomend them enough. Courtney gave the talk on the way to the island and back. You can tell that she knows her stuff. The island itself is absolutely gorgeous. We saw lots of neat shells, crabs, and sea birds. The dead trees – caused by erosion – are hauntingly beautiful. REALLY great tour. We saw a number of dolphin on the way out, but on the way back in, OH MY GOODNESS ! We must have seen a dozen, including one group that put on a show just for us. They also swam right to the boat, surfacing several times, before swimming under the boat and making their way out away from the shore. It was just great. – Katy S., Facebook Reviews
So we decided to do it again this year. Once again, it was fabulous! There was plenty of room for our party of 13. Our captain and guide, both named Robert – easy to remember, were both friendly and full of knowledge. The kids and adults all had a blast crabbing and the blue crab feast was delicious! I can not recommend this excursion enough! – Mary C., Facebook Reviews
Thank you so much for the extraordinary trip with our 7th graders last week! I lost count of how many kids said this was the best part of our two-day Charleston adventure. Robert is amazing with kids and had them completely hooked while we learned so much more than I could hope to remember. I’m planning on coming back this summer with just my family since my husband and other daughter need to experience this. Pass on our thanks again to Robert for taking such great care of our students (and convincing them that shoes are completely unnecessary in life). – Amy K., Facebook Reviews
WE LOVE BARRIER ISLAND ECO TOURS!! We are locals and do this every opportunity we can. We have been able to do 2 dolphin sunset cruises in different seasons. The dolphins came very close to the boat (sometimes right up to the boat) and a beautiful sunset to top it off both times. I loved seeing boneyard beach as the sun was starting to go down. The captains were very knowledgeable! So much wildlife we even saw the rare rosette spoonbills!
The exploration tour is also incredible!! More time at boneyard to explore. We took our hammocks and a lunch and swayed the morning away. I highly recommend this trip!! I can’t wait to go on the next one.
Lastly, our latest trip was in August for shark fishing. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch any sharks BUT to us that didn’t matter we were so happy to be on the water, celebrating a birthday! We were lucky enough to be the only ones on the trip giving us a private charter. We caught tons of fish and saw plenty of dolphins. Our guide, Robert, was superb and down to earth. He answered all many of my questions too. At the end he took us to “the photo tree” giving us a rare and unique experience you can only get at high tide. He made our time and trip so special. We appreciated that!
I tell everyone about Barrier Island Eco Tours!! Even strangers! It gets better every time!

This was our second time out, first was with my son’s therapy group and this time we got to bring my husband and I cannot speak highly enough of our trip! Our tour guide Robert was so knowledgeable, fun and made learning so much fun for us and our kids! We have lived in Charleston for 9 years and the Capers Island Tour is seriously by far the best thing we’ve done here. Don’t miss out! I emailed our daughters teacher with the link for field trips and she is so excited as it’s perfect for their class!

My husband has been dying to do a charter fishing boat tour. We decided on the shark fishing trip because our four year old son is interested in sharks. We were going to book online but decided to call. We were able to get a discount for our son over the phone, whereas the internet wouldn’t. It was about a 3 hour trip. We went out to the intercostal waterway to catch bait first. Then we fished for shark. We caught some young black tip sharks, a sting ray, and a hammerhead type shark. We loved it. Other than the heat, we had no complaints. 🙂
