Join us for a boat adventure full of fun activities and camaraderie!
To all those wonder women out there who have been interested in coastal skills but never have had the time, or opportunity to learn, we have an upcoming workshop for you! On January 31st, we are offering a chance to learn first hand, from other women, skills that will enable you to take advantage of the multiple recreational opportunities our salt marshes and barrier islands provide. Join the female “Captains” from Barrier Island EcoTours and Golden Girls Outdoors for a boat adventure full of fun activities and camaraderie.
This workshop includes visiting a local oyster bed where we demonstrate AND will harvest oysters, clams and mussels. We will then venture to Capers Island to an instructional fishing session. This would include rod selection, tying knots and making rigs. We will go over some of the basics of where to fish & regulations, types of fishing lures and bait, to safely de-hooking and releasing a fish as well as filet demonstrations. In addition to fishing we’ll go over some basics of cast netting, shrimping and crabbing too!
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!!! Courtney, with Golden Girls Outdoors, will be spearheading basic boat driving, navigation, and anchoring at the beach. While we are on the beach, we will cook our harvest over an open fire and enjoy some of Shane’s famous fish stew. Our female captains will then lead the group on a one way nature walk to the bone-yard beach and through inland trails learning about the wildlife as well as edible native plants. The group will be picked up on the south dock on Capers Inlet to enjoy a relaxing cruise back to the IOP marina as the sun sets over the salt marsh.
You are welcome to bring anything you like to eat or drink in a small cooler . Wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and we suggest wearing or bringing layers. A pair of garden or work gloves as well for gathering oysters.
