One island north of Capers is Bulls Island, a six-mile-long barrier island and the southernmost island within the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Part of the refuge managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bulls Island is one of South Carolina’s 35 barrier islands and one of the most wild and undeveloped places along our coast. With maritime forest, freshwater ponds, salt marsh, dunes, and miles of undeveloped beach, Bulls Island is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including alligators, white-tailed deer, bobcats, dolphins, shorebirds, and nesting sea turtles. Its famous Boneyard Beach is a striking reminder that barrier islands are constantly changing as waves, storms, erosion, and rising sea levels reshape the coastline. Bulls Island also holds thousands of years of human history, from Native American shell middens to the remains of an 18th-century lookout fort and the historic Dominick House. Today, the island is protected as part of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, allowing its beaches, forests, marshes, and wildlife to remain largely wild.
