New Bird Tour Announcement!
Barrier Island Eco Tours is offering a special Birding Sunset Cruise led by a bird expert and master naturalist! Guests will have the opportunity to experience golden hour along the Lowcountry’s waterways and observe the most spectacular birdlife! The tour will be led by local Master Naturalist and avian expert Nicole Marie Pettinelli, with other wonderful crew members.
Departing from the Isle of Palms Marina, the trip will explore the Intracoastal Waterway between Isle of Palms and Capers Island, focusing on shell banks and other important coastal habitats where birds gather during high tide.
Guests may encounter large concentrations of American White Pelicans, American Oystercatchers and other shorebirds, while Roseate Spoonbills, egrets, herons and ibises return to evening roosts. Bald Eagles and Ospreys are also commonly seen in the area, and bottlenose dolphins are frequently encountered along the route.
“This is such a special time to be on the water,” said Pettinelli. “You have shorebirds gathering on the shell banks, wading birds moving toward their evening roosts, and the entire salt marsh changing as the sun begins to set. It’s a wonderful opportunity for both experienced birders and people who simply want to learn more about the wildlife of the Lowcountry.”
A spotting scope and expert birding guidance will be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring binoculars, layered clothing and any food or beverages they would like during the trip.
